ButterOnce: The Perfect Corn Butterer

Effortlessly Spread Butter on Your Grilled Corn

Fresh corn on the cob is always a staple at any summer barbecue, but getting butter onto your perfectly grilled corn cob without it sliding off is nearly impossible. Introducing ButterOnce, the innovative corn butterer designed by Joseph McMahon.

While waiting in line at a family BBQ, McMahon noticed everyone struggling to get the butter to adhere to the corn and not fall into a puddle on the plate. Inspired to create an easier and more efficient utensil, he went back home and started experimenting with molds and melted plastic to create a shaped knife that perfectly matched the conical shape of an ear of corn.

What sets ButterOnce apart is its unique design. The knife features a curved stainless steel blade that holds a pat of butter in place while spreading and melting it on the ear of corn. The curvature of the blade mirrors the conical shape of the corn, ensuring that the butter fully adheres to the entire cob. Unlike traditional knives, ButterOnce's design prevents butter from dripping off the cob and onto the plate. The beveled edge of the blade allows users to slice or scoop any desired amount of butter they want to apply to the corn.

The handle of ButterOnce is made of high-density polyethylene, molded in two halves. The tang and blade are made of 1/16" thick polished stainless steel, die-cut and stamped to form the curved shape. The two halves of the handle are sandwiched over the tang, and the three pieces are fastened together with three rivets. The outside edges of the blade are ground to a suitable sharpness for slicing butter, without being sharp enough to cut the hand.

ButterOnce measures W38.1 x D12.7 x H165.1 mm, making it compact and easy to handle. Its ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip for users of all hand sizes.

To use ButterOnce, simply slice a desired pat of butter from a stick or scoop out the desired amount from a tub. With the butter adhered to the curved blade, spread it on a hot ear of corn in an up and down motion, turning the cob as you go to evenly distribute the butter over the entire ear of corn.

The ButterOnce project started in June 2014 and was completed in November 2015 in Connecticut. An ecommerce site was launched in November 2015, making it easy for corn lovers everywhere to get their hands on this innovative tool.

ButterOnce has received widespread recognition for its design and functionality. In 2018, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

Make your summer barbecues even better with ButterOnce. Say goodbye to messy butter and hello to perfectly buttered corn on the cob.
